Matthew 26:6 - 13, Mark 14:3 - 9, John 12:1 - 8

Over the next few days, as we celebrate Passover, we are going to explore Jesus’ very last activities and take a look at the  significant events that happened. As a believer you know that this week marks a very special time in the Christian calendar. Our faith and belief hinges on the death and rising of the risen LORD. So what is the significance of His last 7 days on earth to our faith? His journey to Jerusalem where he was crucified starts in Bethany.

BETHANY: The beginning of the journey …

On this day, Jesus arrived in the town of Bethany. During His time there a woman who was known in the city as being of questionable character came in with an alabaster box filled with expensive perfume.  She came in broke the box and poured it on His head: anointing Him. The significance of this act demonstrated her adoration and powerful worship to a saviour King.

It was a worthy sacrifice. It cost her year wages. Think about what a year’s salary means to the average working person. Car payments, a bond, school fees etc …It was not a small sacrifice. She gave Jesus her all, she loved much, expressed great faith, was forgiven much. Jesus took her sins to Himself and forgave her of all her unrighteousness. Please note that her extravagant act of worship attracted envy and wrath… sometimes our acts of worship attract similar attention. You might have been told to tone it down, to not be “too” fanatical. Don’t hold back because there is a great reward. Look at what Jesus did for the woman after her worship.

Jesus gave her a new life. He gave her peace which had eluded her all through her life.  Are you filled with pain, trouble and sorrow, mistakes and failures? Take a cue from this woman who poured out her soul without saying a word and was given compassion by Jesus. Take it to Jesus with love and faith, you will be cleansed, forgiven and made whole. If Jesus can welcomed this sinful woman and allow her to even touch Him, then anyone of us is welcomed also into His open arms and kingdom of love, no matter the gravity of our sins.
