Good friday: Lay it all down at the foot of the cross

Trials, Lies and Cries continued . . .

Jesus faced a trial throughout the night where many false witnesses came forward to try to frame Him. He suffered physical abuse, they spat on and slapped him . . . .He took it all so that the scriptures might be fulfilled. By this time our Lord was exhausted from lack of sleep and dehydration.

In the morning, Jesus was brought before Pilate by the Leading priests, elders and religious leaders in the Jewish community. These men  were very powerful and connected enough to know how to manipulate the system to accomplish their objective of getting rid of the Nazarene, Jesus. For they envied His power and His following. And so  ...

..at this point the leading priests stirred up the crowd to demand the release of Barabbas (A revolutionary murderer) instead of Jesus. Pilate asked them , "What should I do with this man you call the king of the Jews?" They shouted back, "Crucify Him!" Mark 15:11 - 12.

And so Pilate handed Jesus over to the Roman soldiers to be flogged and crucified.

There is something we need to understand; of all the ages that the Father chose for Jesus to lay down His life for us, the one He was born into as a man was the cruelest.  The Roman soldiers had invented the most horrendous torture devices ever known to man. . . crucifixion. It is a slow painful death. Crucifixion results in death by suffocation.

The above scripture I quoted speaks about Jesus being flogged.  The image above does not even begin to depict what he must have looked like. He was not flogged with an ordinary whip.  Historians have established that Roman soldiers would have used a special whip known as a cat with nine tails. This whip tore the flesh off his body. Many prisoners did not survive this brutal flogging. Jesus took 39 lashes for you. See image below and visit the link.

 Before handing Jesus over for flogging, he (Pilate)  washed his hands of the matter. The crowd screamed,

..."We will take responsibility for his death - we and our children." Matthew 27:25 (NLT).

Beloved this is such a profound sentence. At face value it seems like it was uttered by the angry mob. But you see every man, woman and child who was ever born and will ever be borne is the reason He died on the cross. It was our sin ...anger, lust, greed, hate that was responsible for His crucifixion . Our pride lead Him to the cross. Our mistakes . . . do you understand friend. Our fallen state which brings death is what nailed Jesus to the cross.

What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus
What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus

CHORUS:
Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow?
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus

VERSE 2:
For my pardon this I see, nothing but the blood of Jesus;
For my cleansing this my plea, nothing but the blood of Jesus.

VERSE 3:
This is all my hope and peace, nothing but the blood of Jesus;
This is all my righteousness, nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Don't ever forget that he became sin for you. As he carried the cross he saw your face, your destiny. He saw sickness trying to cage you, depression trying to suffocate the very life out of you. He saw the devil hatching schemes to try to kill, steal and destroy you and He said. No. I will take all of that so that you don't have to be sick, poor, oppressed by the devil anymore. For you, He became sin.

After Pilate handed Jesus over to Roman soldiers, the soldiers mocked our Saviour. Beloved, at this time our Saviour was weak from a combination of fatigue, exhaustion and a loss of a lot of blood.They stripped Him down and put on a red robe and a crown of thorns on His head. They spat on our LORD. They struck Him on His head.

Then he was led away for crucifixion.They crucified our LORD and that is when He became our Saviour. Remember friend he had the power to call down legions of angels to beat up the Roman soldiers and all the people who slapped, cursed and spat on Him. Many people have confessed that if they had been in his shoes, they would have retaliated and demonstrated their power to show who they are. That is why only JESUS could humble himself to a death on a cross on the place called Golgotha.

The events of the day became too much for his physical body as he had to carry his own cross to the site where he was crucified. His body could not take the weight of the tree trunk that  was used to crucify Him. Remember it would have to be able to carry the weight of a fully grown man in His prime. He was only 33 after all.

At noon the bible tells us that darkness fell upon the land for three hours. Thank you LORD for your sacrifice, your love for us. Thank you. Can you just praise Him beloved. He did it all for you. He endured the cross for you. Here is an extract from a book detailing what he went through medically.

The pain of crucifixion

 According to The Crucifixion of Jesus Christ" by C. Truman Davis, M.S. March, 1965: His left foot was pressed backward against his right foot, and with both feet extended, toes down, a nail was driven through the arch of each. As he pushed Himself upward to avoid the stretching torment, He placed His full weight on the nail through His feet. He felt searing agony of the nail through His feet. As the arms fatigue, great waves of cramps sweep over the muscles, knotting them in deep, relentless, throbbing pain. With these cramps comes the inability to push Himself upward.

 John 15:12 - 13 (NLT)
"This is my commandment: love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down ones life for ones friend."

At the end of three hours, our Lord gave up the ghost after he committed His spirit into the hands of God. He said, " IT IS FINISHED!"
