Evangelism and counselling refers to counselling directed towards unbelievers. It is an opportunity presented to counsellors to present the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ and so must be used to lead a person to Christ.
It must be used to make the person understand that Jesus Christ died for this sinful World and shed His blood for the remission of sin. He paid the ultimate sacrifice with His precious blood that he/she might be saved.
The scripture says, “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God” Rom 3:23. Here this scripture is saying, all including the counselee have sinned hence the need for repentance and a turning over of his/her life to Christ is needed.
In Rom 6:23, the scripture says, “For the wages of sin is death but the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”. Every unbeliever or sinner must be made to understand that Jesus had to die that they might have eternal life.
During the counselling session the mentioned of sin should be taken serious. Sins should not be categorized as small or big and glossed over in any counselling session. Counsellors must know that there is no big or small sin in the eyes of God. Both the so called “big sins” and “small sin” can take anybody to hell.
Every problem came as a result of sin. Whatever difficulty one is passing through is because of sin. Only death to sin and a resurrection to a brand new way of life can really solve humanities problem. This is why God has given man an opportunity to reconcile with Him by accepting and receiving Jesus as Lord and saviour. Therefore we should all seek to imitate Him.
Evangelism imposes new standards, new ways of life and new values. However what Christian counsellors should seek to impose on the counselee is the standard of God as stated in His word and not their own standards. Therefore, conduct should be biblical from the beginning; that is, scriptural. It should be the basis of conduct and prayers offered at the appropriate time as the counselling progresses.
Finally counselling can only be said to achieve its purpose when the counselee becomes a Christian.
Beloved tomorrow will be the Last installment of this series on Christian counselling. We will be looking at the qualities or character of a good Christian counsellor.
God bless.
