Let us look at the scriptures to understand better what
state Saul had fallen to from Isaiah 19. To contexutalise the verse, this is
the word of the Lord against Egypt as prophesied by the prophet Isaiah. Although
the focus was Egypt, the scripture gives us clues into the state of Saul when
he had been put aside by God for his disobedience and the misuse of his office.
Isaiah
19: (AMP)
3And the spirit of the
Egyptians within them will become
exhausted and emptied out and will fail, and I will destroy their counsel and confound their plans; and they will seek counsel from the idols and
the sorcerer’s, and from those having familiar spirits (the mediums) and the
wizards... 12Where then are your wise men? Let them tell you now
[if they are so wise], and let them make
known what the Lord of hosts has purposed against Egypt [if they can].
We have already seen that Saul fit the above mentioned description. His aim was to ask satan to tell him the will of God because he was no longer full of the Spirit of God. He became empty, vain, and foolish and open to deception and possession by evil. The bible tells us that when the Spirit of God departed from Saul, an evil spirit entered him. Remember he became empty and so fear gripped him. Fear is the weaponry of satan or the faith of the devil. Where there is fear the battle is half won by satan and on the verge of victory. Instead, in every situation that troubles your heart put your cares and burden on God. He can more than handle it.
There
is no doubt that Saul was a fearful man. It was so ingrained in him that you
could literally see fear in every area of his leadership and rulership
throughout his 42 year rule as king in Israel. This was what satan saw in him
and capitalized on in his plot to ruin his rulership and aborted the dynasty
God had intended for Saul.
He committed
several mistakes and errors as a result of fear. For example he spared Agag,
the king of Amalekites and some of the best choices of animals instead of
destroying them as instructed by the LORD because he feared that the people
would revolt against him.
1 Samuel 15:24-25
24And Saul said to Samuel, I have sinned; for I have
transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I feared the
people and obeyed their voice. 25Now, I pray you, pardon my sin and
go back with me, that I may worship the Lord.
It was
also fear that made him consult the witch of Endor. Why is that I am reminding
you of this? It is because it is not good for a child of God to be fearful or
live in fear. Fear is surrendering to the will of satan and handing over your
fate to the enemy, succumbing to the situation that satan has boxed you into.
When fear is in you the Spirit of the LORD disappears and you become vulnerable
and a hapless victim. Fear is the opposite of faith. This is clearly
illustrated by the case of Saul.
Once
satan discovered Saul had fear in him, he caused him to sin against God which
made the Spirit of God to depart from him and paved the way for the entrance of
evil spirits or demons that would later torment and make him commit several
blunders and more sins against God.
1 Samuel 16:14-15
14But the
Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord
tormented and troubled him. 15Saul's servants said to him, Behold,
an evil spirit from God torments you.
It
was also fear, envy and jealousy that made him nearly pin David to the wall
with his spear and javelin. He started feeling insecure whenever David was
around him, even though David was God-sent. Fear made him to see David as his
enemy and rival. Satan, the father of lies, sold him a lie that David was after
the throne. It was fear that opened him up to all sorts of evil and wrong
decisions that would eventually cost him his very life and the throne for his
descendants.
1 Samuel 18: (AMP)
10The next day an evil spirit from God came mightily upon Saul, and he raved [madly] in his house, while David played [the lyre] with his hand,
as at other times; and there was a javelin in Saul's hand. 11And
Saul cast the javelin, for he thought, I will pin David to the wall. And David
evaded him twice. 12Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was
with him but had departed from Saul.
Do
you notice the irony of the words “an evil spirit from God came mightily upon Saul” in 1 Samuel 18:10? The same was
said after he was anointed by Samuel. 1 Samuel 10:10b “and
the
Spirit of God came
mightily upon him [Saul].” Fear is the major plank of witchcraft. Child
of God, fear has made many leaders, men and women to fail. Fear has turned many
World leaders to despots and autocrats. Many have turned against their advisers
(the angels) sent to them by God and regarded them as enemies. On the home
front, fear has turned many God-given wives and husbands into the enemies of
their spouses for no apparent reason. Beloved, fear opens the gate for the
devil to come in to steal, kill and destroy. The reason for this is obvious.
Let us go back to Isaiah 19:13 (AMP) to gain understanding.
“The princes of Zoan have become fools, and
the princes of Memphis are confused and deceived; those who are the cornerstones of her tribes have led Egypt
astray.”
The thinking behind this is simple. If
you strike the shepherd, the sheep will scatter and become vulnerable to
attack. So the enemies plan for leaders is to bring deception and confusion in
order to lead his/her flock astray. If confusion reigns between husband and
wife then the foundation of family will be shaken and he will then have chance
to strike and destroy what remains of marriage institution.
Therefore beloved let us make a
concerted effort that we will take back whatever ground the enemy has taken in
our lives; whether it is in our marriage, career or even our walk with God. We
must never forget that we have the armour of God [refer to post on the armour
of God], we have the name and blood of Jesus and we have the Spirit of the Living
God in and around us. Do not quench the Holy Spirit by allowing fear to
overtake and paralyse you. In closing, God has not given you a spirit of fear
but of LOVE, POWER and a SOUND MIND. Let this be your confession and word for
meditation. Stay blessed and in Faith in JESUS name, AMEN.
