Gen 5:21-24
(AMP)
21 When Enoch was 65 years old, Methuselah
was born. 22 Enoch walked [in habitual fellowship] with God after the
birth of Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 So all
the days of Enoch were 365 years. 24 And Enoch walked [in habitual
fellowship] with God; and he was not, for God took him [home with Him].
WHAT DOES THE WORD WALK REALLY
MEAN?
To help us appreciate this message, let us examine the meaning of the
word Walk. The word walk means Hâlakh (pronounced haw-lak΄) in Hebrew.
Hâlakh is a root of so many words in Hebrew. Words like mahalâk: a walk,
journey, a going, derive their meaning from hâlakh. It can also mean
figuratively, "to go along with or get along with" which denotes
acceptance, agreement and sometimes consensual intercourse. Hâlak is a general term used for
going, and refers specifically to walking in an usual and normal relationship
or a close friendship with another or for associating one with a cause he/she
believes in. In Greek it is called Peripatéō which is a compound of 2 words: Peri which stands for being comprehensively
around, and patéō,
meaning walk. In Greek the word peri simply qualifies and places stronger
emphasis on patéō. Taken
together it means walk around in full circle.
SO WHAT
THEN DOES IT MEAN TO WALK WITH GOD?
Let us look beyond the ordinary meaning of the word ‘walk’ to taking
a careful look at what it is means to walk with God. It means being in a deep relationship with
God. And when there is a relationship with God, it implies allowing Him to
dictate the pace to form a divine soul tie with Him. Remember where your heart
is there your treasure is. To walk with God is to live in His presence and saunter around with
Him. It is to comprehensively reside and enjoy your life in God.
Beloved the man Enoch was one of the
few men on Earth who walked with God. He lived a very short life, 365 when
compared with that of his peers. Many of his contemporaries lived almost a 1000
years. Methuselah for instance lived 969 years. But Enoch was the only one that
was reckoned to walk with God. Enoch is remembered today because he lived a
righteous life and had an enduring relationship with God. That is because....
“The
memory of the righteous is blessed but the name of the wicked will rot”. Proverb 10:7
(KJV)
Enoch was not superhuman, he was
flesh and blood like you and me but he could be regarded as a type of Christ in
his generation. He was one of 3 persons in the bible who never tasted death. He
was raptured because God took him straight to Heaven.
A HEAVEN TO
GAIN AND A HELL TO SHUN
Psalm 84:10
(Amp)
10 For
a day in Your courts is better than a thousand [anywhere else]; I would rather
be a doorkeeper and stand at
the threshold in the house of my God than to dwell [at ease] in the tents of
wickedness.
Luke 16:19-31
19 There was a certain rich man who
[habitually] clothed himself in purple and fine linen and revelled and feasted and made merry in splendor every day. 20 And at his gate there
was [carelessly] dropped down and
left a certain utterly destitute man named Lazarus, [reduced to begging alms
and] covered with [ulcerated] sores. 21 He
[eagerly] desired to be satisfied with what fell from the rich man’s table;
moreover, the dogs even came and licked his sores. 22 And
it occurred that the man [reduced to] begging died and was carried by the
angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 And in Hades (the realm of the dead), being in torment, he
lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far away, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried out and said, Father Abraham, have pity and mercy on me and send Lazarus to
dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in
this flame. 25 But Abraham said, Child, remember
that you in your lifetime fully received [what is due you in] comforts and delights, and Lazarus in like
manner the discomforts and
distresses; but now he is comforted here and you are in anguish. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has
been fixed, in order that those who want to pass from this [place] to you may
not be able, and no one may pass from there to us. 27 And
[the man] said, Then, father, I beseech you to send him to my father’s house—
28 For I have five brothers—so that he may give [solemn]
testimony and warn them, lest
they too come into this place of torment. 29 But
Abraham said, They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear and listen to them. 30 But he answered, No, father Abraham, but if someone from the
dead goes to them, they will repent (change their minds for the better and
heartily amend their ways, with abhorrence of their past sins). 31 He said to him, If they do not hear and listen to Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be
persuaded and convinced and believe [even] if someone should
rise from the dead.
Beloved the scriptures above are
simply telling you that all the years you spend outside God are a wasted life. Being
a gatekeeper or porter in the house of God is better than a billionaire who
does not know God. Why? Because what matters is where you spend your eternity.
Spending your eternity as a porter in Heaven is far better than spending your
eternity in Hell as a one-time trillionaire on Earth’s tent of wickedness. Let’s
go back to Enoch. Beloved do you know that:
•
Enoch had family
•
He was married
•
He had children
•
He had friends
•
He had businesses and hectic schedules
However one thing that is very sure
was that none of these were a hindrance with his relationship with God. None of
these obligations no matter how noble were given as an excuse on why He could
not walk with God. None was cited as a
drawback to his association and dedication to God. Similarly, the society around
Enoch were corrupt and wicked, he was not influenced by them. The societal evil
and wickedness in his days was never posited as excuse. “If you cannot beat
them you join them syndrome” was also in existence during his days but he
refused to compromise. To him none of these merited the joy of taking away his
walk with God. He considered His walk with God the most enduring obligation and
supreme duty of any man on Earth.
Beloved Enoch could be considered as
a lone ranger in his walk with God in his generation. He refused to be swayed
by what was happening around him. He was focused and remained focused till the
end. Can that be said of you? God bless.
