Gen 1:1-3 AMP
IN THE beginning God (prepared, formed, fashioned, and) created the heavens and the earth. |
The earth was without form and an empty waste, and darkness was upon the face of the very great deep. The Spirit of God was moving (hovering, brooding) over the face of the waters. |
And God said, Let there be light; and there was light. |
Christian counselling is the work of the Holy Spirit. Effective counselling cannot take place unless He is involved. He is the Paraclete (counsellor).

The bible says, God created the heavens and the earth.
When God said, “Let there be light and there was light,”
it was the Holy Spirit who effectively brought the word of God into action. However, note that Holy Spirit could do nothing until the WORD was spoken. When the Word was spoken by God, Holy Spirit moved into action immediately and brought it to pass.

Holy Spirit is God with us (Emmanuel). Counsellors must know this and must operate in His presence. He can do nothing unless He is invited. He must be allowed to do His work during counselling sessions. Counsellors only need to speak the word of God and Holy Spirit will carry it out. The word of God is powerful.
Counsellors need the help, guidance and assistance of the Holy Spirit to fully understand and interpret the scripture. He is the author of the scripture. He knows better where to apply it and use it.
Again, counsellors must bear in mind that genuine transformation and personality changes expected to take place in the life of any counselee can only be done by the Holy Spirit. Key elements of spiritual growth such as love, joy, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control as written in Gal 5:22 are what only the Holy Spirit can do. Any attempt to generate these virtues without Him will fail and will end up being an exercise in futility. It will also tantamount to rebellion which is a grievous sin.
Finally counselling without the scripture is counselling without Holy Spirit.
